Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

Paediatrics & Neonatology

Treating a child with an illness is not the same as treating an adult. It requires specialized care and a different degree of understanding. Our Advanced Neonatal & Paediatric Tertiary Care Centre provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, primary and preventive paediatric care, from birth to adolescence.
We have a Level III neonatal care with a 1:1 patient to nurse ratio, which has earned us the status of a referral unit in the region. Functioning in tandem with other specialties including Obstetrics & Paediatric surgery, the department is fully geared to handle life threatening situations involving in-utero transfers as well as neonatal and paediatric surgical emergencies.

Facilities

  • Housed in a spacious 5000 sq. ft. area with separate intensive care units for neonatal and paediatric emergencies.
  • Neonatal ICU (30 bed facility)
  • Paediatric ICU (17 bed facility)
  • Best available equipments – Ventilators, Incubators, Neurosonography and Echocardiography machines, Blood Gas Analysers, Pulse Oximeters, Syringe/Infusion pumps, Blue Phototherapy, Colour Doppler, CT Scan and central oxygen.
  • Experienced nurses providing one-on-one care for children
  • Services of a resident paediatrician available 24 hours a day

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

The NICU has a capacity of 30 beds providing 24 hour service on a one-to-one basis to out born babies with multiple problems warranting intensive care. The neonatology unit comprises of three separate divisions based on the grading of risks.
  • Critical Care -For high risk babies needing interventional treatment, modalities including artificial ventilation, exchange transfusion etc. and constant monitoring
  • High Dependency -In-utero transfers & inborn babies - extreme preterm or babies with neonatal problems requiring close monitoring
  • Low Dependency - Growing Nursery -For low birth weight babies needing careful feeding techniques; aseptic nursing care and close observation

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The PICU with a capacity of 17 beds handles the entire spectrum of paediatric emergencies both medical and surgical.

High Risk Governance

In high-risk pregnancies, the mother is transferred to the hospital prior to delivery to avoid preventable complications to the newborn and mother; the latter is subject to CTG monitoring followed by timely intervention as and when indicated. Problems likely to occur while transferring a high-risk baby after delivery can be thus prevented.

Neonates/Medical emergencies

Extreme premature/IUGR, Meconium Aspiration Syndrome, RDS, Neonatal jaundice, etc. requiring interventional treatment.

Regular Follow up Clinics

  • Neuro developmental assessment and intervention
  • Growth & nutrition
  • Monitoring screening for Retinopathy Of Prematurity (ROP) & in-house cryo therapy when indicated
  • Screening for hearing

Our Achievements during a decade of service

Survival rate of babies greater than 25 weeks

Janani Scheme

Janani Scheme is a unique programme designed by the Department of Obstetrics, intended to culminate in the birth of a healthy baby to a healthy mother. The scheme is divided into three segments pertaining to the three phases of a normal pregnancy, namely, the 1st trimester (the initial three months), the 2nd trimester (the intervening three months) and the 3rd trimester (the final three months). Janani scheme is primarily aimed at normal pregnancies and includes clinical evaluation of the mother by experienced obstetricians at regular intervals as well as periodic investigations like blood tests / ultrasound scan etc. as deemed necessary by the consultant doctors. One can join this scheme either in its entirety or for particular segments. Special packages for normal delivery / Caesarian sections, if required, are also available for members of the Janani scheme.

Birthing Suite

The state of the art Birthing Suite makes childbirth an evermore enjoyable process for everyone involved. The plush waiting area takes care of the frizzled dads to be and other members of the family. The modern labour room has a more scientific approach towards labour and birth. The unique bed relaxes the mother and puts minimum strain on her back. And the best thing is the absolute hygeine in the whole place, quite disjointed from the rest of the hospital.

morbid obesity

What is morbid obesity ?

Morbid obesity is a disease which is chronic and life long, due to excessive fat storage in the body.

How do you assess morbid obesity?

For all practical purposes, obesity is assessed by a measurement called body mass index (BMI). It is calculated simply by:

Weight in kilogram
BMI = ( height in meter)2

BMI of a person:

Average weight : 18 – 22.5
Over weight : 22.5 – 27.5
Obese : 27.5 – 37.5
Morbid obese : > 37.5
Super obese : > 50

How does morbid obesity differ from being over weight or obese?

Over weight / obesity is a reversible condition and can be treated by dieting and exercise, but morbid obesity require surgical intervention. This is because the body mechanisms that control a person’s weight are set in such a matter that they gain weight easily. These patients find it difficult to lose weight and even more difficult to sustain it.

What are the risks associated with morbid obesity?

These are increased risk of developing high blood pressure, type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall stone disease, cancer of breast, prostate and colon.
Morbidly obese patients are victims of prejudice and public ridicule due to their size and this may lead of mental depression, avoiding social visits and functions, quitting jobs, avoiding public transport etc.

Morbid obesity is a treatable cause of early preventable death.

Why should morbid obesity be treated?

Once morbid obesity is treated surgically, there will be sustained and permanent weight loss, which will lead to improvement of physical and mental morbidity. Morbid obesity is a disease like any other disease.
What is yo-yo dieting?

It is a condition in which morbidly obese patients undergo strict and vigorous dieting and exercise, looses weight of about 5 – 7 kgs a month only to regain it once they stop dieting. But once surgery is done, dieting helps weight loss which is sustained.

What is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is a treatment option for patients with morbid obesity. This surgery helps you lose weight by altering your body’s food digestion and absorption. There are 3 surgical options – each having their benefits and risks the choice of which should be decided after a thorough discussion with your surgeon.

Are you a candidate for morbid obesity surgery?

You will qualify for morbid obesity surgery if:
  • You are classified as ‘morbid by obese’ (BM > 37.5)
  • Your BMI is 32.5 – 37.5 with severe obesity related medical condition e.g. diabetes, heart disease, high BP, arthritis
  • Other methods of weight loss (dietary/medicines) have been unsuccessful.
  • You are unable to perform routine activities / daily chores due to the weight problem.
  • You have understood the surgical procedures for weight loss, the risks and after effects involved and are committed to make life long behavioral changes pertaining to dietary and exercises.
  • You are mentally (psychiatrically) stable

How does morbid obesity surgery change your life?

Patient must learn to eat food in small amounts and to chew it well and slowly, weight loss starts soon after surgery and continue for 1½ - 2 yrs. Improvements occur in obesity related medical condition and almost 60% of patient can stop medications. There is enhanced quality of life with improved stamina, mood, self esteem and body image.
